In 1995, Lei’ohu rediscovered a heiau (Hawaiian temple) in Kahakuloa, Maui. Under her guidance and inspiration, many hands have worked to reawaken the mana (divine power) of Kukuipuka heiau, and it is once again a place of healing, sharing, and prayers. Many and diverse groups choose this place for special gatherings, such as prayers for world peace, cultural classes, lessons in slack-key guitar and Hawaiian herbal healing.

Protocol to enter heiau
A heiau is a Hawaiian temple and so much more.  It is a designated place for the practice of prayer and at Kukuipuka for healing.   Proper respect should be shown at all times.

  • Remove shoes before entering heiau
  • You may dress in your traditional regalia.  In Hawaii women wear kihei (sarong) tied over left shoulder over clothes.  Men wear kihei tied over right shoulder.
  • Ho’okupu (offerings) are not required.  Your silent prayers or chants are an offering in itself.  If you would like to make a Ho’okupu to Kukuipuka, the simple rule is to bring items that are natural, such as flowers, water, plants, leis, ferns or other greenery.
  • Line up at upper entrance of heiau and you will be motioned in by the Kahu.
  • You may chant or do a silent prayer before entering.
  • Do not sit on the rocks.   They are sacred.
  • No food allowed inside walls of heiau area

What to bring with you

  • Mats to sit on ground
  • Water
  • Food (to be eaten outside the walls of the heiau area)
  • Something to take your trash with you
  • Hat or something to keep the sun off
  • Joy, love and gratitude

Preparation before coming
Come with an open heart & mind.  Some people choose to cleanse in the ocean before coming.  Or, simply do a protocol that is comfortable for you.  Open up/unblock your charkas so that the glorious energies that will be coming through will be able to flow through you.
